Ten minutes, worth it
What to Check Before Calling a Leak Detection Company
A few checks take about ten minutes and can save you a service call if the cause turns out to be something simple.
Five Checks Worth Doing First
- Toilets. A few drops of food coloring in the tank, left for 10 to 15 minutes without flushing. Color showing up in the bowl means the toilet is leaking internally.
- The meter test. Everything off, then check if the dial is still moving.
- Irrigation system. Check for a stuck valve or a zone running longer or more often than scheduled.
- Visible fixtures and connections. Under sinks, behind the washing machine, around the water heater.
- Outdoor spigots and hose bibs. A slow drip here is easy to miss entirely.
If none of these explain what you are seeing, especially if the meter test shows continued movement with everything off, that points toward an underground or slab leak, which is where specialized detection equipment becomes necessary rather than optional. See exactly where that line sits.
