DIY vs. Professional Leak Detection
What you can (and cannot) reasonably check yourself before deciding whether you need a specialist.
What You Can Reasonably Do Yourself
The meter test, the toilet food-coloring test, checking visible fixtures and connections, checking irrigation zones, and generally observing where symptoms show up (which room, which wall, which part of the yard). See our full pre-call checklist for the step-by-step version.
What Requires Professional Equipment
Pinpointing the exact location of a leak under a slab or underground typically requires acoustic listening equipment, pressure-testing equipment, and training to interpret the results accurately. You technically can buy consumer-grade acoustic leak detection equipment, but accurately interpreting what it is telling you, and avoiding unnecessary digging or cutting based on a misread, is a different skill than owning the device.
There is no formal government licensing requirement specific to leak detection as its own trade in most cases, but the equipment and judgment involved are specialized enough that most homeowners find it worth hiring a specialist rather than guessing with a tool they have never used before.
